I’m sure you’ve heard the buzz right now about Croatia. All the tourists and travelers are flocking to this new European destination, in search of beautiful coastline and cheaper prices than its western European counterparts. It is a country that has gained popularity rapidly, and is every bit as lovely as you would expect. In order to make the most of your trip, you should check out these spots. I spent a few weeks exploring the country and found that these were the best places to travel in Croatia, and together they give you a great look at what the country is all about. Of course, if you have time to do more, there’s a lot to see and do in Croatia but these are a good starting point!
Best Places to Travel in Croatia
5 | Dubrovnik
Everyone wants to visit Dubrovnik, since it’s become famous as the filming location of the popular show Game of Thrones. And while it’s a beautiful town, I was overwhelmed by the amount of tourists there. It’s a good starting point, but you should definitely go see more of Croatia than just Dubrovnik!
4 | Split
A bit further up the coast from Dubrovnik is Split, which is a popular port town that gives you access to a lot of the beautiful islands that make up the Dalmatian Coast. The town itself is really lovely and is centered around Diocletian’s Palace, a great place to explore.
3 | Hvar Island
Hvar Island is one of the most popular islands to visit from Split, with its quaint old town and lush fields of lavender. You can do it as a day trip but it’s more fun to spend a couple of days here! It’s the perfect quiet escape from the crowded mainland coastline and I really enjoyed my visit out there.
2 | Zagreb
The capital of Croatia, Zagreb sees fewer tourists since it’s further inland from the popular coastal towns. But it is one of my all-time favorite European cities, because it has colorful buildings, a slow and steady vibe, the café culture, and an idyllic aesthetic that is lost in cities that are overrun with tourism.
1 | Plitvice
Probably my favorite part of my time in Croatia was visiting the Plitvice Lakes National Park, where I saw more waterfalls than I could have ever imagined. I was blown away by the natural beauty of the park and really enjoyed walking around. I would have spent more than a day there if I could have! Wherever you go in Croatia, make time for a visit to Plitvice!
The other region of Croatia that I really wanted to visit was the Istrian Peninsula, at the northernmost part of Croatia’s coastline. I had intended to drive up there and road trip around the countryside to visit the small towns and vineyards that make people describe the region as reminiscent of Tuscany. That was before I had a rental car fiasco and didn’t make it up there. So I’m giving Pula and all of Istria an honorable mention because I think if I made it there I would have loved it.
So there you have it, my recommendations for the best places to travel in Croatia! I hope you enjoy traveling through this beautiful country as much as I did!
