When I was in Palm Springs, I had a chance to try the Westin Mission Hills Resort & Spa’s signature drink, the caliente margarita. (FYI: Caliente means HOT in Spanish!) It was so tasty and perfect for that region that it really stuck out to me as the signature drink of all of Palm Springs. So I was really happy when they were kind enough to give me the recipe card. I knew I would need to make a caliente margarita back home, when I was missing the sunny and beautiful Palm Springs!
The drink is spicy for sure, but it’s not overwhelming (even I could handle it!). It calls for jalapeno tequila, but the grapefruit and citrus sour helps to balance out the spice. I think the flavors of this cocktail really show the influence of vibrant Mexico, cool southern California, and the distinctly posh and hip Palm Springs. I loved it so I made one at home!
Caliente Margarita Recipe
To make your own caliente margarita, you’ll need:
- 1.5 parts jalapeno tequila
- 7 parts citrus sour
- 2 parts fresh squeeze grapefruit
- 1 part triple sec liquer
Mix all four ingredients in a shaker. Then add ice and shake some more. Salt the rim with salt (I used pink Himalayan salt because it looks better with the drink and it’s healthier than regular salt!). Strain the mix as you pour it into the glass. And garnish with a grapefruit wedge. Then sit back, relax, and enjoy a taste of Palm Springs with your caliente margarita! (Actually, enjoy with a friend because this makes 2 drinks.)
