Wellfleet has perhaps the most waterfront for its landmass in Cape Cod, owing to the fact that its shorelines seem to be the work of a toddler given a crayon after a candybar. But all that waterfront makes for some spectacular views and secluded spots to enjoy the beauty of this small Cape town. For a summer vacationer, Wellfleet is a perfect getaway spot to enjoy the serenity of the Cape as it was originally experienced and coveted, before the secret got out and the whole world came to see.
Wellfleet has managed to maintain its Cape Cod integrity, priding itself on the many beaches and waterfront views, the active marina, the bike path originating here and extending down through the Cape, the main street where local businesses thrive, and the slow and simple pace of Cape Cod summer life.
The beaches are quiet and there is much nature to be enjoyed, particularly with a kayaking trip through the creeks off the harbor. You could certainly come to Wellfleet for a quiet respite, a break from life’s busyness in a truly beautiful place. I felt contemplative just standing by the dunes, watching the steady action of the waves in the harbor.
But you could also bring the fun and action to Wellfleet, in the form of a big family gathering or friends getaway. I can picture the children running across the Uncle Tom Bridge, or a friendly sandcastle competition on the beach, a walk around the downtown after a seafood dinner that leaves everyone full and happy.
It might be the last remote Cape Cod town. Surrounded on all sides by vacationers, this town refuses to succumb to the pressures of high paced summer life down the Cape. It’s far enough out on the peninsula (mid-forearm by way of Cape-to-arm analogy) that Wellfleet maintains the beautiful charm of Cape Cod one hundred years ago.
