Hiking Mt Monadnock

Posted on Posted in North America, Travel

The second most popular mountain for hiking in the whole world (after Mt. Fuji in Japan), Mt Monadnock in New Hampshire is a short drive from Boston. This makes it a perfect day trip from the city. While it’s not as grand as the White or Green Mountains further north, it’s easily accessible. Hiking Mt Monadnock is the perfect way to get some exercise and be rewarded with some stunning views at the end of it!

Set aside about four hours for this hike, up and back. Bring plenty of water and snacks, as the uphill climb is tiring. The mountain offers multiple trails to reach the summit, but the most popular for starters is the White Arrow Trail. This trail varies between flat paths through thick forest and steep rock climbing. It’s exhausting but so beautiful the whole way up!

At the summit, everyone adds a layer for warmth and sets up for a picnic, to enjoy the views and revel in their accomplishment of scaling a mountain! As I sit here 3,165 ft elevated, I breathe in the crisp mountain air that refreshes me physically and emotionally.

Gazing out across the New Hampshire landscape, I’m amazed by this vantage point. I imagine that many years ago, Ralph Waldo Emerson or Henry David Thoreau may have sat in this exact spot. It’s no wonder they were able to write their masterpieces, with views like this as inspiration!

The mountaintop is populated now by a diverse group of hikers. A pack of sorority girls pose for a photo, while a family snacks on their sandwiches, a teenage couple shares a kiss on the summit, and a woman and her father make it to the summit after a slower-paced hike. I’m glad to see the latter have made it, since I passed by them earlier on the trail.

As the cool air begins to chill me, I begin my descent. Working a different set of muscles on the descent, I am thoroughly sore by the time I reach the bottom! It has been a satisfying day of hiking, and I will definitely sleep well tonight, sore and happy. It was a successful hike on Mt Monadnock!
