7 Must-Haves to Survive a Long Flight

Posted on Posted in Travel Advice

If you’ve been there you know, having a long-haul flight in front of you is daunting. You’re staring down the barrel of ten or more straight hours of sitting in the same position in a tight seat next to a stranger. You don’t know if it’ll be super hot or freezing cold, but you know you won’t be able to move much or get comfortable. You wonder to yourself if flying halfway across the world is really even worth enduring all of this. But it is and you know it. They’re part of the journey so we have to deal with it and come prepared. After a few too many long-haul flights of my own, I’ve figured out what I need with me to survive a long flight. These are my 7 must-haves to survive a long flight, be sure to stock up before you go!

Must-Have Items to Survive a Long Flight

High-Quality Headphones

Block out the noise of your chatty neighbors and the baby screaming three rows up. Get the right headphones and you can escape into your own world for the whole flight. A good set of headphones can make all the difference! And these are a great set at a great price.

Eye Mask

Blocking out all the light and visual stimulation with an eye mask is so important when you’re trying to get some shut-eye in-flight. I love wearing an eye mask, it puts me right to sleep! It’s amazing how it effective it is, not just at blocking out the light but also at shutting out the other stimuli in the environment. It’s a great trick for getting to sleep wherever you are!

A Good Playlist

You’ll need a good playlist on to survive a long flight, and especially one that will help you get some sleep. I’m absolutely obsessed with the Jazz for Sleep playlist on Spotify, it’s soft, mellow, and totally relaxing. It helps me get to sleep in a jiffy, and I think you’ll like it too. Just be sure to download the playlist before you board the flight!

Comfy Socks

When the plane gets up to elevation and my feet swell a little, I like to take off my shoes and throw on a pair of comfy socks. It helps me get comfortable on the plane, especially for a long flight. And that can make all the difference in being able to get some sleep!

Inflatable Neck Pillow

The longer the flight, the more you absolutely need a neck pillow to survive it! I don’t know about you but I can’t stand to carry around a neck pillow when I actually reach my destination. So this is a great solution, a neck pillow you can inflate when you need and then store compactly when you don’t!

Sleepytime Tea

Make the plane feel like home by settling in with your sleepytime comforts. I always enjoy a cup of sleepytime tea before bed because it helps me fall asleep. So I like to bring a couple tea bags with me for a long flight. When the flight attendants come around with beverages, I ask for a cup of just hot water, add my personal tea bag to it, and I’m well on my way to a nice long sleepy flight!

Big Warm Sweater

I won’t get into the whole perfect airplane outfit since I covered that for you here. But I will say that a big warm sweater is absolutely necessary to survive a long flight. It can keep you warm when they crank up the aircon, it doubles as a blanket, and can be rolled up as extra pillow support in a pinch. These are some of my favorite sweaters!
