If you’re anything like me, then the arrival of summer has you heading up and out in search of the city’s best rooftop and patio bars. I make it a personal mission of mine to seek out the best outdoor bars in Boston, and frequent them all! There’s just something more satisfying about a beer when it’s enjoyed under the sunshine, a glass of rosé with a cool breeze, or a Moscow mule with a view of the city skyline. From one cocktail-lover to another, here are my picks for the best outdoor bars in Boston that you should definitely try this summer!
Best Outdoor Bars in Boston
1 | Trillium Beer Garden
Atlantic Avenue & High Street, Boston, MA
This pop-up bar is a new affair, bringing the Rose Kennedy Greenway its first beer garden. And there’s no better brewery to bring us this summer special than Trillium, the local microbrewery that was recently named world’s best! Bonus points go to Trillium Beer Garden for letting dogs in and having food trucks lined up nearby.
2 | Envoy Rooftop
70 Sleeper Street, Boston, MA
One of my tried-and-true favorites, if you follow my instagram then you will have surely seen photos of the Envoy Rooftop bar. It has the best views of the Boston skyline from just across the bridge in the burgeoning Seaport District. This trendy summer watering hole gets busy though so you may have to wait on line to get in the elevator up. But trust me it’s worth the wait!
3 | Legal Harborside
270 Northern Avenue, Boston, MA
One of the neighborhood favorites in the Seaport District is Legal Harborside, a great place to enjoy a seafood dinner overlooking the harbor and then a great place to socialize on the rooftop bar as the sun begins to set. It’s regularly ranked as one of the best nightlife spots in Boston, and summer is when it’s at its best.
4 | Harvest Cambridge
44 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA
Elegant and cozy, the Harvest Cambridge’s patio bar is pleasant retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. You’ll feel whisked away to the Hamptons or the French Riviera when you step onto the patio that’s lined with French cafe-style chairs, bulbous topiary shrubs around the perimeter, and a white pergola overhead. You’ll want to dine and drink again and again at this award-winning patio restaurant.
5 | Tia’s Waterfront
200 Atlantic Avenue, Boston, MA
Located close to the financial district and business-heavy downtown area, Tia’s Waterfront bar is a favorite after-work watering hole in the summer. Crowds of young professionals squeeze into this patio bar for a chance to unwind over cheap beers and to socialize with friends. It’s not the fanciest bar on the waterfront but it has staying power, having been a favorite happy hour choice in Boston for decades.
6 | Publico Street Bistro & Garden
11 Dorchester Street, Boston, MA
This South End staple is just the right amount of eclectic and eccentric. Head out to Publico’s open air atrium for a cocktail among the jungle of plants. This bar is new to the Boston scene and it’s wonderfully weird in all the right ways, from its bright orange seating to its graffiti-esque menus. Try the Jack Talk Thai or French Ninja cocktails when you go!
7 | The Intercontinental
510 Atlantic Avenue, Boston, MA
Out behind the Intercontinental Hotel on Independence Wharf is a patio bar with a view of the rapidly rising Seaport District. Young professionals escaping from their cubicles descent upon this patio bar at the end of the week to enjoy the nice weather while it’s here. The bar offers an impressive selection of 60 vodkas for the crafting of every vodka-based cocktail you could want, but beer and wine is also available.
8 | Lawn on D
420 D Street, Boston, MA
Everyone’s favorite lawn is the Lawn on D, which is like a glorified adult playground. With swings that glow at night, a row of cornhole games, lawn jenga, a volleyball net, and two live music stages, this setup is only made better by the fact that beer and wine are on sale in the bar tent! There is also a selection of events throughout the summer that bring in even more fun to this lawn bar.
9 | Rowes Wharf Sea Grille
70 Rowes Wharf, Boston, MA
The Rowes Wharf Sea Grill is a lovely spot to sit out for dinner or a drink on the patio overlooking the harbor. And with nightly entertainment Tuesdays through Fridays as part of their Summer in the City series, you’re almost always guaranteed a special evening here! It’s one of my favorite outdoor bars in Boston for sure!
10 | Rooftop @ Revere
200 Stuart Street, Boston, MA
The newly renovated and super trendy Rooftop@ Revere features a pool, a full-service bar, and a number of cabanas to sunbathe in. It’s the perfect spot to play hooky and lounge out all day! And with views overlooking Back Bay to complement the elegant poolside setup, it’s no wonder Bostonians are flocking to this rooftop bar.
11 | American Fresh Beer Garden
301 Canal Street, Somerville, MA
Everybody loves a good beer garden, and this Somerville spot is no exception! Located by the new Assembly Row complex, this beer garden is a stone’s throw away from shopping, restaurants, LegoLand, and more. Enjoy a cold slumbrew beer while enjoying the sounds of local bands performing live, late into the night at American Fresh Beer Garden.
12 | Boston Calling Block Party
600 Atlantic Avenue, Boston, MA
You don’t have to wait for the Boston Calling Music Festival to enjoy some music outside with a drink in hand! Each week in the summer, the Boston Calling team brings a Block Party to the Rose Kennedy Greenway, across from South Station. With several beers on tap, a DJ serving up some tunes, and a lawn full of games to play, it’s the perfect place to relax after work on a nice day.
13 | The Baseball Tavern
1270 Boylston Street, Boston, MA
When there’s a Red Sox game on, the best spot to enjoy the game outside of Fenway Park is the rooftop at The Baseball Tavern. From the rooftop you can see straight across the street into Fenway Park, which makes this arguably one of the best rooftop bars in the city. Grab a beer and a spot overlooking the park well before the game starts and the bar fills up!
14 | Coppersmith
40 W 3rd Street, South Boston, MA
The Coppersmith is two outdoor bars in one, with a giant 75-person front porch where you can sit out and chat the evening away in true Southie fashion, and a rooftop bar featuring a vintage Airstream that serves up craft beers and specialty cocktails. This spacious bar is quickly climbing the ranks as a Boston favorite, but don’t worry there’s space for everyone here!
15 | Pier 6
1 8th Street, Charlestown, MA
If you head north into Charleston you’ll find Pier 6 has some of the best views of the Boston harbor and skyline. At this nautical meets contemporary chic bar, cocktails are king. Try the Blackberry Fizz, Captain’s Mistress, or Lifesaver, all guaranteed to cool you off on a warm summer evening!
