It was three years ago this month that I embarked on my first solo trip abroad. And my country of choice? India. That trip came about because I wanted to see the Taj Mahal, I felt an urgency to visit, and I didn’t know anyone else that wanted to visit India. Not willing to miss out, I decided this was my time to try solo travel. As it turns out, my trip to India impacted me in more ways than I would realize at the time. I’ve since traveled all around the world, visiting 35 countries on 5 continents, mostly alone, and loving every bit of it. India holds a special place in my heart and I will certainly visit again. So if you’re wondering what a trip to India might do for you, here are 10 reasons to visit India.
Reasons to Visit India
1 | A world unlike our own
No matter where you come from, where you call home, or where you’ve traveled, nothing can prepare you for India. It’s insane and intense and unlike anything you’ve seen before. With the extremes of poverty, overcrowding, and culture converging in this Asian country, you’re sure to be overwhelmed and impressed.
2 | The food
There’s just no Indian food like the Indian food in India. The homemade variety of all your favorite Indian dishes, and also some you’ve never heard of, will make your mouth water for more. Come prepared with an empty stomach! (And maybe some medicine in case Delhi Belly gets the best of you.)
3 | To appreciate home
I’ll never forget my first morning in New Delhi, when I woke up early and watched the action on the streets from my hotel lobby. I saw people sweeping trash into piles to light it on fire for warmth, I saw people washing up in the streets, I saw people waking up on the streets to make breakfast for their families. Poverty runs rampant in India, and it will break your heart to see it. But you’ll also go home with a greater appreciation for every little luxury you once took for granted.
4 | Meet great people
My tour guide in India was among the kindest and most compassionate I’ve encountered. He welcomed my group into his home, and cooked us a traditional dinner that we could share with his family. I’ve heard others recount similar stories of this kind of hospitality in India, and I implore you to embrace the opportunity to see India through the eyes of Indians.
5 | The Taj Mahal
It’s undeniable, the Taj Mahal is a wonderful sight to see. One of the Seven Wonders of the World in fact! Well, the Taj Mahal was my impetus to visit India, and it did not disappoint. It is so magnificent and impressive, it took a great feat of labor and craftsmanship to create it, and it’s a central icon of India. Even the Indians line up around the block to visit the Taj Mahal!
6 | Feel like a celebrity
In a country filled with generally short, brown-skinned Indians, I stood out like a sore thumb, being six feet tall and blonde! Chances are, you’ll stand out too, and it’s a pretty interesting feeling to have all eyes on you. I had a lot of people ask to take a picture with me, I felt a bit like a celebrity!
7 | Experience their spirituality
In all my travels around the world, I haven’t met any people more spiritual than the Indians. The spiritual devotion I experienced in India was so impressive, from their attendance en mass to the temples, to their frequent celebrations of various gods and goddesses. It’s amazing and you should see it for yourself.
8 | Diverse landscapes
From the peaks of the Himalayas, to the holy waters of the Ganges River, to the beaches of Kerala, to the crowded streets of Delhi and the Bollywood scene of Mumbai, and beyond, India offers a diverse array of landscapes to enjoy.
9 | Sensory overload
Basically, you’ll be on sensory overload for the entire time that you’re in India. The chaos in the streets is something you have to see to believe! It will disorient you, confuse you, and overwhelm you, but it’s amazing to see how society can function under the immense stress of this degree of overpopulation.
10 | A great adventure
There’s no place like India. No matter where you’ve traveled, nothing can compare to what you’ll experience here. So if you’re ready for the adventure of a lifetime, pack your bags and head to India. There’s a whole great adventure in store!
