The Middle of the World is marked and celebrated at a landmark just north of Quito, Ecuador. At this exact point, the equator runs through and the latitude is a flat 0°0’0″. Here you can stand with one foot in the northern hemisphere and the other in the southern hemisphere! It is a popular tourist destination and rightly so. In few other spots around the globe is the equator even marked, let alone with a monument so grand as this. It’s a short trip from Quito, Ecuador and it’s definitely worth visiting!
The monument was formally erected by the government of Ecuador to commemorate the first geodesic mission, in which a group of scientists studied the flattening of the Earth’s poles. They did this by comparing the distance between degree meridians here and closer to the poles. Significant for its geologic importance, this spot now draws in visitors and locals alike that want to experience the equator for themselves.
I felt chills up my spine and goosebumps on my arms as I stood at the equator here at the Middle of the World. In all my travels I try to remember moments of significance, that stand out and stay with me. Reaching the equator meant so much to me, even though it’s just a geological spot on the earth, just another piece of land that’s been fancied up for tourists. But to me it signified another milestone, another success of reaching new and interesting places, another adventure for the books. It was a great visit to the Middle of the World!
