Visiting the king penguins on the Falkland Islands goes down on my list of coolest experiences in my life! I get up close and personal with these magnificent creatures, while they’re in just their natural habitat! How awesome is that?! And considering the effort it took to get here, I know that you might not all have the chance to come see for yourselves. So, I’m showing you here the best of these king penguins in photos and videos (because after all, it’s their playful behaviors that make them so endearing!).
I depart from the main town, Stanley, with my guide in a sturdy old Land Rover and we make our way off-road to the penguin colony. The Falklands are home to lots of different penguins, including the king penguins, gentoo penguins, and magellanic penguins! At the colony, it’s breeding season and depending on the type of penguin, their young may already be walking around or they may be unhatched and incubating still. With the gentoos, the young are sporting some fluffy feathers to keep them warm and they’re learning to run towards the water by following their parent in exercise drills! For the king penguins, the parents take turns sitting on top of the egg to keep it warm (good teamwork!).
The king penguins are rightfully named because they look regal with their sharp black and white coloring and orange accents on their heads and beaks. In fact, they are widely considered the best looking penguins of all (according to the most recent penguin beauty pageant). They’re the second largest, after the emperor penguins, and I absolutely love seeing them here on the white sand beaches and huddled together in their breeding ground.
Okay enough of the description already, let’s show you the king penguins! (Go ahead and share this with your friends, don’t be selfish with the penguin love!)
