I had such a fantastic and crazy time when I visited Dublin. And that is because I visited Dublin on Saint Patrick’s Day! This was a few years ago now, but I was ready to celebrate my Irish heritage and I wanted to visit this fun city on their great day of celebration. Dublin was a lot of fun for St Patrick’s, maybe even more fun than Boston, but that’s a tough call. Whenever you choose to visit throughout the year, these are the best things to do in Dublin, all guaranteed to be a fun time!
Best Things to do in Dublin
1 | Guinness Storehouse
First things first! In Dublin, you’ve got to tour the Guinness Storehouse. If you’ve ever wondered what goes into the process of crafting the world famous Guinness beer, this is your chance to find out. And if you’ve never been brave enough to taste this dark heavy beer, this is the time to change that too. All factory entry tickets come with a free pint at the 360 Bar on the top floor. It’s seven floors of beer perfection, you can’t miss this!
2 | Trinity College
Ireland’s oldest college, Trinity College dates back to 1592. In all its years of higher education, Trinity has seen many great scholars and it now houses over 4.5 million printed volumes. The most notable of which is the Book of Kells, the world’s most famous medieval manuscript. This historic campus is a must-see when you’re in town.
3 | St Patrick’s Cathedral
A great deal older than the St Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC, the one in Dublin was founded in 1191! It’s a notable religious landmark, as it’s one of a two-cathedral city. Anyone can visit, and with gothic architecture this stunning, you really should visit!
4 | Phoenix Park
One of the largest parks in a European capital city, Phoenix Park provides Dublin with ample green space. This is the perfect place to go for a walk or a bike ride on a sunny day, or even to visit some animals at the Dublin Zoo. You can also join up with a guided tour of the park at the visitor center.
5 | Dublin Castle
This massive fortification is a focal point of the city, and has been at the center of British and Irish government for hundreds of years. Learn all about the history of this important castle with a guided tour of the castle, state apartments, Viking excavation, and chapel royal.
6 | St Stephen’s Green
The park in the middle of the city is St Stephen’s Green. With floral displays, a pond filled with ducks, lots of walkways and benches, fountains and arches, it’s a lovely space to walk around. It reminds me of the Boston Public Garden, a park I love very much! And it’s right next to the popular shopping street, Grafton Street, so it’s a great retreat after fighting the crowds for a good deal at the shops.
7 | Jameson Distillery
You know what they say…when in Dublin, drink as the Irish do! And this Irish whiskey is too iconic to miss. Tour the Jameson Distillery and learn about the history and craft of whiskey, then try some samples to see what this family distillery has to offer. Their motto since 1780 has been sine metu, without fear, and you can taste their passion for whiskey in every bottle.
8 | Chester Beatty Library
The Chester Beatty Library has been deemed one of the best museums in Europe, and I can confirm that it is awesome! Containing ancient and significant manuscripts from nearly every region of the world, this library is like a mecca for lovers of culture and history. And admission is free, so it’s definitely worth a look!
9 | Temple Bar
As I said, the Irish love to enjoy a drink, and when you’re here you should too! Temple Bar is like Cheers, the neighborhood watering hole that has been around forever. Okay so they may not know your name if it’s your first time in (or you visit during the craziness of St Patricks Day!), but it’s a historic, award-winning pub and a great spot to enjoy a drink when you’re in town.
10 | GoT Tour
I know some of you are dying to visit Dubrovnik to see all the spots where they filmed the famous Game of Thrones sights, but a real fan will know that there are a lot of GoT sights in Ireland too! Join a tour like this one to catch a glimpse of the best GoT sights in and around Dublin.
