Whether it’s one of the snowiest winters in history or just a regular winter with cold temperatures and some snowfall, Boston is a lot of fun in the winter! While Boston is definitely a walking-friendly city and much of its charm is best seen from the lovely outdoors, you need not shy away from Boston in the wintery months. In the peak of winter in Boston (from December through February), make sure you bundle up when you go outside, and try out these fun wintertime activities in Boston:

1.  Go ice skating on the Frog Pond in Boston Common. When it’s not too windy out, join your fellow Bostonians for a skate around the Frog Pond turned skating rink in the middle of Boston. With great views of the city, skates available for rent, and the camaraderie of the public skate rink, you can embrace winter’s offerings on ice and surrounded by snow.

2.  Visit Boston’s many museums. In this historically and culturally rich city, there is so much to see and learn, and there are plenty of museums that bring that to life! Try the Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, USS Constitution Museum, JFK Presidential Library and Museum, Old State House, and Harvard Museum of Natural History. That should keep you busy for awhile!

3.  Grab tickets to a Bruins or Celtics game! Both of these major sports teams play in the versatile TD Garden, and with many games throughout the winter, you should be able to catch some of the action!

4.  Take the hot chocolate tour. As you scurry from restaurant to restaurant, moving quickly to escape the cold, you’ll be rewarded at each destination with samplings of steamy, rich hot cocoa. It’s a great way to try out new restaurants and explore the area! It’s one of the warmest and yummiest of the wintertime activities in Boston!

5.  Go shopping in the Prudential Center and Copley Plaza, which are large enough to keep you busy all day and maybe even get you lost! Then take the elevators all the way up to the to Top of Hub in the Prudential building, where you can get dinner or drinks and watch the sun set over the city from the warmth of the indoors.

6.  See a show at the Boston Opera House or Wang Theatre. Locally-based shows and traveling theatre troupes fill the auditoriums with music, laughter, smiles, and tears. For entertaining shows in jaw-dropping venues, look no further!

7.  Tour the Boston Public Library. This huge, architectural gem is always popping up on lists of the world’s best libraries, and it’s even a popular venue for weddings! Free tours of the building are offered daily, and after you tour around you can pick a spot to sit and read. With a cafe located inside the library, you won’t have to leave all day!

8.  See a show at the classic venue for rockin’ live music, House of Blues. The original hall is in Harvard Square, and a second, larger site opened up in Kenmore Square. Now Aerosmith’s creation has spread throughout the country but it started right here in Beantown!

Whether it’s The Boston Globe Travel Show, the New England Boat Show, the Boston Wine Expo, or another, you’ll enjoy an enormous exhibition hall filled with experts in their field, ready to share information and free samples with you!

10.  After a snowfall, grab your skis, snowboard, or sled and climb up to the top of Beacon Hill. You can join the other snow-lovers in cruising down the steep streets of this neighborhood! This is by far my favorite of the wintertime activities in Boston! Everyone acts like a kid again, sledding down the streets and having a ball!

  1. I’ve only been to Boston in the winter, and I quite like it. Walking around Harvard, as well as the areas surrounding it is a lot of fun. There is a travel bookstore right across the street from part of the Harvard campus, and it’s where I found three of my all-time favorite books including “The Geography of Bliss”.
